LeWarne Leads GW Baseball Past Dayton, 4-2

Senior Bobby LeWarne struck out a season-high seven batters in GW's 4-2 win over Dayton on Friday.

DAYTON, Ohio - Senior Bobby LeWarne allowed just three hits across eight dominant innings on the mound to lead the George Washington baseball team past Dayton, 4-2, in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Woerner Field.

GW (18-21, 7-3 A-10) has now won six of its last seven games and will look to clinch its second consecutive A-10 series in game two todayon Saturday.

LeWarne allowed just two unearned runs on three hits with one walk and a season-high seven strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the season. He also lowered his team-best ERA to 2.80.

GW took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when junior Kevin Mahala reached on an error
with one out, moved to second on a single by sophomore Robbie Metz and then scored on a RBI single by sophomore Brandon Chapman.

The lead was extended to 3-0 after the Colonials plated a pair of runs in the third inning. Junior Joey Bartosic led off the frame with a double to the gap in right center field and moved to third on a base hit by sophomore Mark Osis. Junior Bobby Campbell then came to the plate and reached on an error, allowing Barotosic to score from third. Mahala added a RBI groundout for the 3-0 lead.

Campbell drove in another run with a RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to extend the advantage to 4-0.

Dayton (13-26, 4-9 A-10) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth on RBI groundout after taking advantage of a leadoff error. LeWarne then escaped further damage with an inning-ending strikeout.




LeWarne started the ninth inning, allowing the first two batters to reach base via an error and single, before giving way to junior Eddie Muhl. Muhl got the first out on a groundout before a run scored on a ground ball to make the score 4-2. He got the final out on a comebacker to the mound to clinch the game and earn his 10th save of the season.

Junior Mark Osis increased his season-best batting average to .386 after going 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored. Sophomore Robbie Metz also finished with multiple hits after going 2-for-4.

Game two will be played this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Junior Shane Sweeney will be on the mound as the Colonials go for the series win.
