WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (9-31, 3-10 BIG EAST) snapped Villanova’s 17-game winning streak with an 11-5 victory over the Wildcats in game one before falling, 2-1, in a tightly-contested game two on Saturday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex.
Georgetown hammered out 20 hits on the day with four Hoyas registering three hits and three Hoyas collecting two hits on the day.
Game 1: Georgetown 11, Villanova 5
Senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) led the circle with seven innings pitched, while the Hoyas belted out 16 hits and 11 runs total to snap Villanova’s 17-game winning streak.
GU would get on the board first in the top of the opening inning as freshman designated player Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) singled to left center, scoring fellow freshman Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) for the 1-0 Hoya lead.
The Hoyas kept the one-run lead until the bottom of the third inning when Villanova’s Lauren
Herschberg hit her fourth home run of the year to right center to tie the game at 1-1.
Georgetown responded right back when senior third baseman Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) gave GU a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single to center field, scoring junior catcher Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr).
Villanova would score four runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to take a 5-2 lead with a two-run home run to center field off the bat of Lauren Hanna.
Trailing 5-2 in top of the seventh inning, Georgetown stormed back to score nine runs on nine hits to take a commanding 11-5 lead.
With the bases loaded, Elvina delivered an RBI single to drive in sophomore outfielder Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington), who opened the inning with a bunt. Junior first baseman Alessandra Gargicevich Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) followed with a two-run single to center field. Keeping the momentum going, Henry posted an RBI single while freshman Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) pounded out an RBI double to left field.
With Georgetown leading 8-5, the Wildcats made a switch at the mound, but the change didn’t faze the Hoyas as they extended their advantage by three more runs. The Blue & Gray added its lasts three runs on a fielder’s choice, a single and a walk. GU captured the game with a final score of 11-5.
Game 2: Georgetown 1, Villanova 2
Looking to extend its momentum into game two of the series, Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Gargicevich-Almeida recorded an RBI single to drive in junior pinch-runner Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc).
Villanova answered with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning.
The teams would battle back-and-forth keeping the game tied for two innings before VU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning off a home run over the left field wall.
The Hoyas would connect for one more hit but would not be able to push past the Wildcats, resulting in a final score of 2-1.
