Colonials Win Three of Four Races
Official ResultsOCCOQUAN, Va. - The George Washington women's rowing team won three of four races on Sunday on the Occoquan River to win both the George's Trophy and the Class of 1998 Cup for the first time since 2013.
GW totaled 16.5 points to win the Class of 1998 Cup over Georgetown and 16.5 points to take home the George's Trophy against the Hoyas and host George Mason.
Conditions were calm with a slight head wind.
"I am really proud of the full team effort set forth on the Occoquan today," said Head Coach Eric Carcich. "It was a great team win and I was really proud of the way we battled in all boats, especially the Varsity 8 and 2V4."
The Varsity 8 race was the closest of the day as Georgetown (6:55.60) narrowly edged out the
Colonials (6:57.00) by two seconds.
"The Varsity 8 race was the tightest '98 cup race I have seen," said Coach Carcich. "It was a one-seat separation the whole way down. It was an incredible battle."
GW's 2V8 picked up key points in both trophy battles after an eight-second win over the field in 7:05.80. Georgetown finished second (7:13.70), followed by George Mason (7:21.30).
The Colonials raced two boats in the Varsity 4 event and finished one-two to top the opposition. GW's V4 finished in 7:53.50, followed by the Colonials' 2V4 (8:07.10).
The Colonials were competing on the Occoquan River, the site of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship, for the second weekend in a row.
"It was nice to get another 2K under our belts out on the A-10 Championship course, which we will be competing on for the third event in a row on May 8."
GW will spend the next two weeks preparing for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which will take place on May 8 on the Occoquan River.
