Hoyas Come Up Short in Series Finale
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball (9-32, 3-11 BIG EAST) dropped its series finale,4-1, against the Villanova Wildcats (28-14, 11-4 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex.
After a scoreless first inning, Villanova would get on the board first in the bottom of the second frame with a sacrifice fly to center field for a 1-0 lead.
Both teams registered a hit in the third inning, but strong field play from both sides kept the score at
1-0.
The bottom of the fourth inning became the difference as the Wildcats added three insurance runs. Villanova’s Brittany Husk singled to left field to drive in one run while a GU error in the outfield allowed VU to tack on two more runs for a 4-0 lead.
The Hoyas would get one run back in the top of the seventh inning as senior Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) hit a solo homerun, her second of the season, to cut the Villanova lead to 4-1.
Appelbe led Georgetown at the plate going 2-for-2 while freshman Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and senior Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) each added a hit.
Junior pitcher Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) took the loss in the circle, pitching six innings, giving up only two earned runs.
The Blue & Gray continues conference action next weekend with a road series against Providence.
