@AU_Lacrosse Drops PL Matinee Against Boston University

WASHINGTON - The American University women's lacrosse team was unable to keep up with fast-paced Boston University on Saturday, as the Eagles fell to the Terriers in the chilly morning matchup, 19-7.

AU is now 3-9 overall, 0-4 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers rise to 5-6 for the season and 2-3 in league play.

Sophomore Izabella Jade led the Eagles' offense with a pair of goals, followed by senior Leah Brennan, sophomores Casey Harkins and Amanda Medjid, and freshmen Emma Vinall and Kendall Goldblum with one each.

Harkins added the day's only assist to come away with two points while also leading the team with three draw controls. Harkins also picked up a team-high three ground balls alongside Brennan.

Sophomore Ana Freda guided the team from the net, tying her career-high with eight saves on 24 shots in 42 minutes of play. Freshman Delaney Oliveira also put in time between the pipes and collected a career-high four saves off seven shots.

The Terriers were led by a pair of four-goal efforts from Ava Barry and Avery Donahoe. Eight other players contributed to BU's final tally, including Ryann Gaffney, Lexi Lewis, and Caroline English, who scored two goals each. Kailey Conry added a game-high six assists.

Kaitlin Belval and Tonianne Magnelli shared draw control responsibilities, bringing down a game-high seven each. 

Boston led the Eagles in the draw circle, 20-7, and put up 37 shots to AU's 20. American collected a game-high 13 ground balls and capitalized off three of their seven free position opportunities.

The Terriers rose to an early lead, building a 5-0 margin before Brennan got the Eagles on the board with 18 minutes remaining in the first half. A goal from Harkins closed the gap to three midway through the half, but a 7-1 run brought Boston up by nine at the break. 

BU continued to stretch its lead early in the second half, scoring three goals before Medjid put away her only one of the day. Jade added a pair of back-to-back goals with under 11 minutes remaining, but Boston had the final say with the last goal of the game to bring the score up to 19-7.

George Washington LACROSSE TOPS LA SALLE, 16-13

WASHINGTON – In its return to the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington lacrosse team topped the La Salle Explorers, 16-13, on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Explorers came out hot in the first half, making their first strike at the 29:12 mark before adding two more to lead by three just seven minutes into the game. The Colonials (9-2, 2-1 A-10) battled back with a pair of their own from Camaryn Kerns and Morgan McDonnell to bring the game within one. La Salle (4-7, 0-3 A-10) responded with back-to-back goals, but GW continued to push on the attack and tied the game at five with 11 minutes to play in the half. The Explorers reestablished their lead with another pair of goals, but the Colonials wouldn’t let up and matched their conference opponent with two of their own from the freshman duo of Abby Carlin and Ioanna Mantzouratos. La Salle scored once more, but GW found the back of the net two more times to close the half with a narrow 9-8 lead.

The Colonials were the first to register a tally after the break, with Mantzouratos scoring her third goal of the game from the free position. One minute later, senior co-captain Jocelyn Donohue found the back of the net for GW once again off of a feed from Mantzouratos. The teams continued to trade goals, before the Colonials began to pull away with four straight tallies to lead 16-11 with 1:23 to go. The Explorers scored twice more, but it wasn’t enough as GW took the 16-13 victory.

NOTEWORTHY:
Mantzouratos led the team with a game- and career-high four goals while adding a pair of assists, one ground ball, and one caused turnover.
Six other Colonials found the back of the net in today’s matchup. The senior pair of Kerns and Donohue each completed a hat trick, sophomores Katie Quinn and Caroline Kiernan scored a pair of goals, and McDonnell and Carlin had one apiece.
The Colonials held a lead at halftime for the ninth time this season.
Freshman keeper Jenna Oler made a season-high matching 17 saves against the Explorers.
GW held an edge in shots (35-34) and ground balls (9-5) while La Salle had a 17-14 advantage off the draw.
LOOK AHEAD: The Colonials will head down to Richmond on Sunday to face the Spiders for a 1 p.m. bout at Robins Stadium.

No. 24/RV Georgetown Takes on No. 2/3 Maryland on Wednesday

WASHINGTON - The No. 24/RV Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (5-3) will make the short trip to the No. 2/3 University of Maryland Terrapins in a nonconference battle on Wednesday evening in College Park, Md. The opening draw is scheduled for 6 p.m. This will be the first road contest for the Blue & Gray since February 24.

The contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU with GU alum Sheehan Stanwick Burch and Jay Alter calling the action.

On Saturday, the Hoyas fell, 16-11, to the then-No. 6/6 University of Florida Gators in a BIG EAST matchup at Cooper Field. A late 7-0 run by the Gators was too much for GU to overcome as the Hoyas picked up their first conference loss of the season. Junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led the way with four goals and one assist for five points in the contest as six Hoyas tallied a point in the game. Senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) managed three goals along with a pair of caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) posted two goals as well as four draw controls.

The Hoyas were outshot, 36-29, and pulled in 13 draw controls to Florida’s 16. Georgetown committed 19 turnovers while forcing 15 from the Gators. Junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) had eight saves to her credit in the cage.

Gebhardt and sophomore attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) lead the offense with 27 points apiece. Gebhardt has tallied a team-high 24 goals with three assists, while Ehle has 10 goals and a squad-best 17 assists on the year. They are followed by sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who is third with 20 goals along with five assists for 25 points.

Whitehurst has pulled in 44 draw controls to go along with 12 goals and five assists for 17 points to tie Seibel, while sophomore midfielder Natalie Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) has 10 goals, four assists, 23 draw controls and a team-high seven caused turnovers.

In goal, Chomo has played a majority of the minutes with 65 saves on the season.

The No. 2/3 Terps are 8-1 on the season and defeated then-No. 4 James Madison, 15-12, on Saturday in College Park. The win marked Maryland's fourth victory over a top-10 opponent this season and second over a top-5 squad. The Terps have faced ranked foes in six of their nine games this season, posting a 5-1 record. Maryland is led by Megan Whittle who has 46 points on the season with 36 goals and 10 assists. Seven Terps are currently scoring in double figures.

The Hoyas are 4-23 all-time against the Terps and 3-10 in College Park. Last season, the Blue & Gray fell on the Hilltop, 17-13. In the last meeting at Maryland, GU lost 18-8 during the 2016 season. The last Hoya victory was an 11-10 overtime win on the road in 2006.
