How it Happened
- Providence got on the board first, scoring in transition off a long outlet pass from its goalie at the 12:45 mark. The Hoyas responded with Firlie's lone goal of the game with 9:22 to play, but the Friars went on to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes, outscoring the Hoyas 3-2 in the final seven minutes of the frame.
- An early goal just 11 seconds into the second quarter gave PC a 5-2 lead – its biggest advantage of the day – before the Blue & Gray blitzed their guests with four unanswered goals the rest of the quarter to take a 6-5 lead going into halftime.
- Coming out of the break, Miller's bouncer 62 seconds into the half beat PC's keeper for a 7-5 lead but the Friars came right back to score 33 seconds later, ending a 16:24 scoring drought. Consecutive goals from Wray and Ransom gave the Hoyas their largest lead – up three at 9-6 – with 6:50 to play in the quarter but Providence rallied back with three-straight goals to close out the frame and pull within one, down 10-9 going into the final 15 minutes of action.
- A hotly contested fourth quarter had Providence knot things up twice, first at 10-10 at the 12:04 mark and again at 11-11 with 5:51 to play. Back-to-back goals from Marshall and Wray put the Hoyas up 13-11 with 4:34 to go but the Friars would not go down without a fight. Providence scored just 30 second later to pull within one, the Hoyas responded with Bayman's goal 36 seconds later and the Friars answered in turn 46 seconds after that to make it 14-13 with 2:42 remaining. In the final minutes, Georgetown won the ensuing faceoff, collected a pair of ground balls after two shots to reset the shot clock twice and overcame a crushing onslaught of defenders attacking Wray on the end line to earn a timeout with 39 seconds to play. Out of the huddle, Carroll was able to trim 17 seconds off the scoreboard before PC's desperation clear attempt sailed high, allowing the Hoyas to seal the game in the waning seconds.
