Gallaudet Athletics

LATHAM, N.Y. – The United East Conference announced its weekly conference student-athlete of the week awards for Sept. 6 and Gallaudet University junior Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) was named Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week.

Upchurch was a menace for opposing teams on

the backline last weekend at the Battlefield Classic, as she leads the conference digs. The junior tallied 73 digs across 16 sets played, which is already nearly a quarter of her output from 2019. Upchurch racked up double-digit digs in all four matches but notched a season-high of 27 in the week's final match against Rowan University. To fill out the stat sheet, the defensive specialist/libero also recorded eight aces and five assists for the Bison (1-3).

Morrisville State College sophomore outside hitter Brianna Gates was named Women's Volleyball Player of the Week after the Mustangs went 5-0 last week and Gates led the way with 81 kills.

GU HONORS
This is Gallaudet's first United East Women's Volleyball Player of the Week honor this season. This is the first United East weekly honor for Upchurch in her career. Plus, this is the first United East weekly honor for any Gallaudet University student-athlete since the conference changed its name and brand in August 2021. The conference used to be known as the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
