ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy baseball team (5-6) picked up
an 11-3 victory over Delaware State (4-5) on Tuesday with 12 hits in
the contest at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. The
Midshipmen used a pair of crooked numbers in the fourth and eighth
innings en route to the victory.
Navy's game on Wednesday against UMBC has been pushed back to Thursday
and the Retrievers and Midshipmen will square off at 2 p.m. on Tuesday
at Max Bishop Stadium.
Zach Biggers (So., Walhalla, S.C.) finished the game with three hits and three RBIs, while the trio of Liam Lowery (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.), Ryan Duffey (So., Duxbury, Mass.) and Michael Coritz (Jr., Clinton, Va.) all finished with multi-hit games. Charlie Connolly (So., Wayne, Pa.) posted a quality start for Navy throwing six innings and allowing one hit and one run.
After recording 12 runs against UMass on Sunday, the Midshipmen followed
it up with their second-
straight double-digit output with 11 on
Tuesday. Navy also produced a season-best 12 hits against the Hornets.
Delaware State struck first with a run in the second inning after the
only hit Connolly surrendered came into score following a sacrifice bunt
and a ground out. However, the Midshipmen countered with a run of their
own in the second inning. Following a triple from Lowery, Duffey
delivered a single to right-center field to score Lowery and tie the
score at one.
Navy's first crooked number on the scoreboard came in the fourth inning
with three runs on three hits. With two outs in the frame, Coritz
singled to score Zach Stevens
(Fr., Lexington, Mass.) and then Biggers followed with a two-RBI triple
down the right-field line to push two runs across and extend the
Midshipmen's lead to 4-1 after four innings of play.
The two-out runs continued to come for Navy as its fifth run of the game came with two outs. Kyle Stewart (Sr., Ladera Ranch, Calif.) reached on a throwing error to keep the fifth inning alive and with Jacob Williamson (Jr., Sims, N.C.) standing on third base, Williamson scored on the play to give Navy a 5-1 advantage.
The Hornets got one run back in the top of the seventh inning following Navy's only error of the contest.
With the Midshipmen leading 5-2 in the eighth inning, they broke the
game open with six runs on four hits and three Delaware State errors.
Biggers drove in his third run of the game on his third hit and after
the Hornets dropped a fly ball in the outfield, two more runs came into
score as Navy extended its lead to 8-2. The Midshipmen's first two outs
of the inning came on a double play, but with the bases loaded Biggers
came into score on the double play as Navy went ahead by seven runs.
Errors continued to plague Delaware State in the eighth inning with two
more errors on the final two scoring plays of the afternoon for Navy,
which allowed Evan Lowery (Jr., Williamsburg, Va.) and Stevens to score the final two runs of the game for the Midshipmen.
Of Navy's 11 runs, eight were scored with two outs in an inning.
The Hornets scored one more in the top of the ninth inning, but the
Midshipmen grabbed an 11-3 victory to win its third game in a row.
Connolly (1-1) picked up the win after throwing six innings allowing one hit and one run while striking out four batters. Trent Topping (Fr., Temecula, Calif.) allowed just two hits and an unearned run in his two innings, while Sante Grossi (So., Riverside, Calif.) allowed a run on three hits in the ninth inning.
Miguel Rivera (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in his four-inning start.
"Charlie Connolly did a really good job for us today," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos
said after the victory. "Today was a day where you did not want to put
extra runners on base and it was not a tremendous hitting day. He
[Charlie] did just that and I thought he pitched really well. I also
thought Trent Topping
pitched really well. Trent got ahead of guys and made them hit his
pitch. I thought that was the highlight of the day with our good
pitching.
"We had a chance to score some runs with two outs with the first five
runs coming with two outs and that was good to see," Kostacopoulos
commented about the offense. "We still need to do a better job with some
of our situational hitting, but we did get some two hits, which was
good to see, but we still have a lot of work to do."
Following the schedule change, Navy will now face UMBC on Thursday
afternoon at 2 p.m. from Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop
Stadium.
