No. 21 Hoyas Defeat Colonials 13-4

WASHINGTON – The No. 21 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad downed the George Washington University Colonials 13-4 Tuesday afternoon at Cooper Field.  The Hoyas used a pair of big runs to improve to 5-1 overall while GW dropped to 1-4 overall.  The win marked GU's final home contest before a challenging three-game road swing.

"I was happy to get the win but a lot of credit goes to George Washington," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried.  "GW did an excellent job on the draws allowing them to dictate the pace of the game and hold possession on offense.  We have to do a better job of responding and making a change as we go forward finishing our shots and getting momentum."

Junior midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) led the way with three goals, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Liza Liotta (Baltimore, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) added two goals and an assist for three points as well as two draw controls on the afternoon.  Senior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) managed a goal and two assists.  Sophomore Mary Pagano (Short Hills, N.J. / Pingry School) and senior Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) had two goals apiece in the win.

The Hoyas outshot the Colonials 39-18 and picked up 22 ground balls to GW's 11.  GU hauled in eight draw controls while the George Washington held the advantage with 11.  The defense was impressive forcing 25 GW turnovers.  On free position shots, the Hoyas went 3 for 5 while the Georgetown keepers combined in a 1 for 4 day for GU.  Senior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier) was awarded the victory with nine saves, while junior Micheline DiNardo (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) saw 11 minutes in the cage.

George Washington got on the board first scoring less than two minutes in.  The Hoyas would answer right back as Lynch scored an unassisted tally and junior Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) added a goal less than a minute later to put GU on top.  Lynch's score sparked a 6-0 run for the Blue & Gray when Pagano scored and Lynch added her second to make it 5-1 midway through the half.

The defense stood strong as Chomo and company continued to stop every attempt.  At the 6:58 mark following a GU timeout Liotta took it herself to curl around the defense to make it 6-1.

GW managed a free position goal with 1:10 remaining in the first half and Georgetown would not be able to score to make it 6-2 at the half.

Georgetown began the scoring with a goal by Gebhardt at 26:50 off of a GW turnover to force a Colonial timeout.  She came out and scored another to make it 8-2 as the Hoyas were rolling.  Liotta then added her second of the game as Bruno found her for the score.  The Colonials ended the 4-0 Hoya run with a goal at 14:47, but Lynch answered with the hat trick.

In the final 10 minutes of action, GW scored to pull within seven.  A goal from sophomore attacker Cameron McGee (Sparks, Md. / Roland Park Country School) and another from Pagano made it 13-4 with five minutes to go which would eventually stand as the final.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad travels to the No. 8 University of Pennsylvania for a 1 p.m. matchup at Franklin Field.  Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
