DDOT's Weekly Construction Update: Work Between Saturday, April 13 and Saturday, April 27, 2019

DDOT is repairing potholes across all eight wards! To report a pothole, call the Mayor's Citywide Call Center at 311 or complete a service request online using the District government's Service Request Center.

Mayor Bowser is committed to eliminating all roadways, alleys, and sidewalks in poor condition in Washington, DC by 2024 through the PaveDC initiative. This publication lists all of the road, alley, and sidewalk paving projects that will be under construction during the next two weeks. The 2019 Paving Plan is now live on the PaveDC website and includes a new tab for sidewalks scheduled for repair, in the coming weeks DDOT will also post the markings plan for the 2019 season. Please note: Work may be adjusted depending on weather and other conditions. Additional projects may be added to this list. DDOT contacts residents and businesses within the work zones before work begins. Unless otherwise noted, work is not conducted on weekends.


Citywide Pavement Restoration Projects

As part of DDOT's commitment to the improvement and restoration of local sidewalks, construction activities will occur at the following locations throughout the next two weeks.

  • Connecticut Avenue NW, between Van Ness Street NW and Sedgwick Street NW 
  • Chesterfield Place NW, between Chesapeake Street NW and Dead End

Citywide Alley Restoration Projects

DDOT is improving alleys across the city. Once work begins, access to parts of the alley under construction will be closed, and parking is restricted. In emergency situations, access may be permitted by notifying DDOT. Work is estimated to take about two weeks, weather permitting.  DDOT will be working in the following alleys this week:

  • Square 4060, bound by Penn Street NE, Owen Place NE, Montello Avenue NE and Trinidad Avenue NE

DDOT Traffic Advisory: Minnesota Ave Phase II Traffic Advisory Tuesday April 16, 2019 through Saturday, May 11, 2019

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close the center lane on
Minnesota Avenue, NE from the Department of Employment Services (DOES)/WMATA Entrance Driveway to Grant Street, NE. One lane of traffic in each direction will be available at all times. This activity will run continuously from 7:00 am Tuesday, April 16, 2019 through 7:00 am Saturday, May 11, 2019, weather permitting.

This work is a part of the ongoing Minnesota Avenue Phase II Rehabilitation Project and is required for roadway reconstruction.

Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful construction personnel.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along and near the I-295 / DC 295 corridor.


The following lane closure will be in place daily from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday, April 15, 2019, through Saturday, April 20, 2019, weather permitting.

The following lane and shoulder continuous closures will be in place during the weekend from 9:00 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2019 to 5:00 a.m., Monday, April 22, 2019 weather permitting:

I-295 / DC 295 northbound up to two left or right lanes/shoulder between Laboratory Road / US Naval Research Lab (Exit 1) and East Capitol Street.

I-295 / DC 295 southbound up to two left or right lanes/shoulder between East Capitol Street and US Naval Research Lab / DC Water / Blue Plains (Exit 1)

Traffic Signals at the intersection of Eaton Road, SE and Firth Sterling, Avenue, SE will be removed and all traffic exiting Eaton Road, SE will be required to come to a complete STOP.

Additionally, East Capitol Street Bridge long-term eastbound and westbound left lane closure between C Street NE and DC 295 Ramps till June 2019.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT projects:

South Capitol Street Corridor Project - Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project calls for replacing the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and transforming related sections of the urban freeway into a beautiful scenic boulevard that increases pedestrian and vehicular safety, improves multimodal transportation options, increases community accessibility and supports economic development on both sides of the Anacostia River.

I-295 / Malcolm X Avenue SE Interchange Improvement Project

The multiple phases of this project include the reconstruction of the I-295 interchange with Malcolm X Avenue SE, including modified ramps and a new access roadway to the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus. The planned improvements will be made between Firth Sterling Avenue SE, on the north, and the South Capitol Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE intersection to the south. The project will provide transportation improvements to serve the proposed Department of Homeland Security headquarters consolidation on the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus.

Rehabilitation of Anacostia Freeway Bridges over Nicholson St, SE

The District Department of Transportation project to rehabilitate the Anacostia Freeway bridges over Nicholson St, SE is part of DDOT’s ongoing commitment to safety. The rehabilitation project will focus on reconstruction of the bridge deck and adjoining ramps to address deteriorating structural elements, ensuring that each bridge remains a reliable part of our infrastructure.

Rehabilitation of East Capitol Street Bridge over Anacostia River Project

The Rehabilitation of the East Capitol Street Bridge (also known as the Whitney Young Jr. Memorial Bridge) over the Anacostia River includes improvements to the substructure and superstructure of the bridge as well as pedestrian improvements, including the construction of a trail connection to provide direct access from the bridge to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The bridge was originally constructed in 1955, and repairs are needed to the bridge deck, concrete abutments and steel girder system.

Rehabilitation of Anacostia Freeway Bridges over South Capitol Street SE Project

Anacostia Freeway Bridges over South Capitol Street SE consist of a pair of one-way bridges built in 1963 and located on northbound and southbound I-295 over South Capitol Street in southeast Washington, DC. This bridge rehabilitation project will eliminate deficiencies, increase safety for the traveling public and enhance the durability of the bridge structures including the replacement of the super structure, the repair of the sub-structure, the addition of new under-bridge lighting for improved visibility and safety, new pavement and asphalt overlay within the project limits and new paint for the existing bridge.
