Rock Creek Far West Livability Study Public Workshop

Washington, D.C - The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host the second of three public workshops for the Rock Creek Far West Livability Study on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. At the second public workshop, DDOT will share preliminary recommendations, discuss public input the project team has received so far, and ask residents to share additional feedback. The purpose of this neighborhood livability study is to enhance the community quality of life through improvements to transportation safety.

The study area is in the District's northwest quadrant and is bound by Massachusetts Avenue, Whitehaven Street, Whitehaven Parkway, Archbold Parkway, Foundry Branch Valley Park, the Potomac River, and the DC/Maryland border. Livability refers to community quality of life as experienced by the people who live, work, and
recreate there. In a transportation context, livability refers to improvements in public space that increase safety and access for all users of the transportation system. Livability study areas include several District neighborhoods and are conducted with a system-wide perspective in mind.

DDOT is undertaking the Rock Creek Far West Livability Study to evaluate the transportation network in the study area from a system perspective and look for opportunities for a safer and more accessible multimodal network. DDOT will work with members of the community and key stakeholders to identify specific opportunities to improve accommodations for people walking, biking, using a wheelchair, riding the bus, and driving. At the end of the study, DDOT will provide recommendations to address such issues as:

Enhancing transportation safety;
Improving pedestrian crossings and sidewalks;
Improving the bicycle network;
Making intersections safer;
Improving driver signage;
Making bus stops more accessible; and
Incorporating milestones consistent with Vision Zero.
