Bison swept by Penn St.-Abington

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University understood it was going to be a tough conference opening weekend as it went up against two of the top teams in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). The Bison were swept Friday by Penn St.-Berks and on Sunday they dropped two games to Penn St.-Abington on a cold and windy day at Hoy Field.

Gallaudet (3-21-1, 0-4 NEAC) battled in the first game but came up short, 8-5, while Penn St.-Abington (11-7, 3-0 NEAC) won the second game going away with a 19-3 win. The Bison have now lost their last 10 games. Gallaudet still has 14 conference games left in front of them so there is still time for the Bison to make a move and climb the NEAC standings as they aim for a playoff appearance.

Gallaudet splits with Cazenovia on Senior Day

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University softball team split its Sunday afternoon North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader with Cazenovia College at the GU Softball Complex on Senior Day. The Bison cruised in the first game and won 8-0 in five innings. In the second game, Cazenovia (7-11, 1-1 NEAC) led for the majority of the game before Gallaudet (8-12, 3-3 NEAC) tied the game, 5-5, in the fifth inning. The two teams scored once in the seventh before playing two extra innings before the Wildcats hit a go-ahead three-run home run and held on to win 9-8 in nine innings.

In between the first and second games, the Gallaudet softball program took time to recognize their senior class. Four-year letterwinners Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.), Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) and Genesis Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) were honored along with team manager Jeremy Franz.

Game 1: Gallaudet 8, Cazenovia 0 (F/5)
Gallaudet broke open an 1-0 game in the bottom of the third inning with a seven-run frame. The eight-run lead was more than enough for freshman starting pitcher Hannah Carter (Dayton, Ohio) to pick up the win as she threw 4.1 innings of scoreless softball. Carter allowed four runs, walked one and struck out three Wildcat batters.

In the seven-run third, junior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) and freshman Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) came through with two-run hits. Henshaw's double went to left field as GU took a 7-0 lead.

Cazenovia starting pitcher Kelsey Morgan (0-3) took the loss as she surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on six hits, walked seven and struck out four. Third baseman Megan Krieger led the Wildcats with two hits including a double.

Game 2: Cazenovia 9, Gallaudet 8 (F/9)
The Wildcat bats came alive in the second game as the visitors clubbed three home runs on the breezy and chilly afternoon. Second baseman Alexandra Clifford (4-for-5, three runs, four RBI) led the offense as she smashed a three-run home run in the ninth to give Cazenovia a 9-6 lead.

Gallaudet responded in the bottom half of the ninth when freshman Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) singled home Hudson, who was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule of the last batter out from the previous inning being placed on second base. Zacarias followed with a double to center field to plate Neild and cut the lead to one, 9-8. On the same play Zacarias tried to stretch her double into a triple but got thrown out at third base to give GU two outs. Rodriguez then grounded out to end the game.

Barlow started in the circle and went 6.1 innings where she allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits, walked three and struck out two. Cazenovia tallied home runs off Barlow in the second and seventh inning. The latter ended Barlow's day in the circle as Zacarias swapped positions with Barlow and pitched the rest of the game. Zacarias (2-6) took the loss as she allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits, walked two and struck out two.

Cazenovia pitcher Abigail House (2-3) earned the win as she allowed eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits, walked three and struck out five.

UP NEXT
It will be a busy Tuesday for the Gallaudet softball program as they are slated to complete the second game of its March 24 doubleheader with Trinity Washington University in the afternoon at the GU Softball Complex. The Bison are leading 14-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The two teams need to play at least one more inning to make the game official.  From there Gallaudet will board a bus and drive to Takoma Park, Md., to face Washington Adventist University in a non-conference doubleheader under the lights starting at 5 p.m.

Gallaudet drops NEAC opener to rival Penn St.-Berks

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team missed an opportunity to pick-up some key North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games against Penn St.-Berks on a windy and cool Friday afternoon at Hoy Field. GU held a 5-2 lead in the first game against the Nittany Lions but threw away the game with several miscues and lost 11-6. In the second game, Gallaudet kept it close with Penn St.-Berks but couldn't gain the lead as they lost 3-2 after eight innings as the game was called due to darkness.

Game 1: Penn St.-Berks 11, Gallaudet 6
Gallaudet fought hard in the first game and battled back to tie the Nittany Lions twice and even held a 5-2 lead after four innings. Penn St.-Berks outscored the Bison 9-1 the rest of the game as the visitors scored four times in the top of the fifth, twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh. GU committed one of its three errors in three of the four innings that Penn St.-Berks scored runs.

Junior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) smacked a RBI triple to right-center field in the bottom of the third inning to drive in GU's first run. Upton scored, moments later, when senior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled to left field as the Bison knotted the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior center fielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) doubled down the left-field line to plate freshman Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.). Two batters later, Upton singled up the middle to score senior catcher Jake Grindstaff (New Market, Md.) and Gumm as Gallaudet claimed a three-run lead, 5-2.

Freshman pitcher Ethan Denson (Huffman, Texas) walked three batters and had an errant throw during the four-run fifth for the Nittany Lions. The visitors took a brief 6-5 lead before GU answered back with a run in the bottom half to tie the game at six. Drolsbaugh tripled to right field as Strong scored GU's sixth and final run.

GU relief pitcher Quintan Polito (Omaha, Neb.) took his fourth loss of the season as he allowed two runs on two hits and two walks as he recorded no outs in the sixth.

Penn St.-Berks reliever Alex Laudenslager (2-0) earned the win as he threw the final three innings where he allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out one.

Game 2: Penn St.-Berks 3, Gallaudet 2
Penn St.-Berks got on the scoreboard twice in the second inning and added a third run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead before Gallaudet got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. The Bison (3-19-1, 0-2 NEAC) scored twice but couldn't tie the game as the game was called for darkness in the top of the ninth.

Penn St.-Berks (7-7, 2-0 NEAC) had scored three additional runs in the ninth with no outs but the umpire called the game because of limited visibility and the game went back to the last completed inning where the Nittany Lions led 3-2.

GU manufactured two runs in the seventh as the Bison took advantage of two Nittany Lions errors. Upton had a sacrifice fly to bring home Grindstaff for GU's first run. Sophomore Winston Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) then reached due to a throwing error as senior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) scored.

Hayes, the starting pitcher, went seven innings where he allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, walked five and struck out five.

Penn St.-Berks starting pitcher Tyler Comport (3-0) threw a complete game where he allowed two unearned runs on four hits, walked four and struck out nine.

GU swept in NEAC opener at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Gallaudet University's softball team began its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) schedule on the road here Thursday and dropped two games to Wilson College.

Gallaudet (5-11, 0-2 NEAC) dropped the first game 11-1 in five innings and lost 5-3 in the second game to the Phoenix (4-8, 2-0 NEAC).

Game 1: Wilson 11, Gallaudet 1
Wilson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second and added six runs to its 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away. Wilson won the game 11-1 in five innings as the game ended due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Gallaudet got on the scoreboard when junior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) doubled to center field to score senior Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) from first base. The Bison run cut the Wilson lead to four, 5-1.

The Phoenix scored six times in the bottom half of the fourth.

Barlow (3-4) took the loss in the circle as she allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, five walks and struck out two.

Wilson starting pitcher Megan Potter (3-4) got the win as she surrendered one run on four hits, no walks and struck out seven.

Game 2: Wilson 5, Gallaudet 3
In the second game, Gallaudet struck first and scored two runs in the first and one run in the third and held a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. Wilson scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning off two Bison errors to take a 5-3 lead, which the Phoenix held until the end of the game.

Gallaudet took advantage of three Wilson errors in the first inning as the Bison pushed across two runs.

GU starting pitcher Hannah Carter (Dayton, Ohio) pitched well into the fourth inning as she only allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, three walks and one strikeout. Zacarias (2-5) came in and eventually gave up the GU lead in the fifth.

Freshman Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) led the Bison with two singles and one RBI.

Potter (4-4) picked up the win as she pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Phoenix after Daphne Buzard started the game in the circle.

Bison doubled up by No. 24 Catholic, 18-9

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University made the short trip over to The Catholic University of America to face the No. 24 Cardinals in a non-conference game here Wednesday.

The Bison (3-17-1) fell behind early 7-0 and later trailed 16-5 before falling 18-9 as the game was called for darkness in the bottom of the eighth inning.

GU scored four runs in the fifth inning as senior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) delivered a two-run double to center field. Sophomore Winston Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) and senior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) both drove in runs to cut Catholic's lead to 10-5 before the Cardinals added six runs in the bottom half.

Gallaudet added two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Strong brought home two runs in the sixth on a single. In the seventh, a Bison runner scored from third base on a passed ball and junior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) singled in senior Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas), who had walked for the fourth time in the game.

Sophomore Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) took the loss as the starter lasted three innings where he allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, two walks and one strikeout.

MJ Dziczkowski (2-0) picked up the win for the Cardinals as he pitched two innings of relief. Catholic had six doubles and 17 hits in the game.

Gallaudet cheerleading to host youth cheer clinic on Oct. 23

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University cheerleading program will be holding a youth cheer clinic on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 9:30 a.m.-Noon at the Field House Dance Studio for deaf and hard of hearing kids and kids of deaf adults (KODA) ages 5-14.

Participants will learn a routine and will be given an opportunity to perform at the end of the first quarter at Gallaudet’s Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 29.

The $25 registration fee includes the clinic, a Gallaudet t-shirt, a face tattoo for game day, and two tickets to the Homecoming football game against Castleton on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. 

All proceeds from the clinic goes to the Gallaudet Cheer Fund.

GU splits on first day of Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team kicked off the 10th annual Worthington Classic here Friday with a win against Rutgers-Newark, 3-1, before falling to Salisbury University in straight sets in the nightcap.

The Bison won their first set against Rutgers-Newark 25-21. The Scarlet Raiders (5-5) responded with a 25-16 second set win to knot the match at one. Gallaudet answered with a 25-20 third set victory before closing out the match in the fourth set, 25-14.

Freshman middle hitter Adele Daniels (Frederick, Md.) recorded a career-high 20 kills to set the Bison offensive tempo. Junior outside hitter Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 16 digs while fellow junior setter Jasmine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) led the team with 46 assists.

Gallaudet (5-9) played Salisbury (9-5) tight in the first set as the Bison lost an early lead and could only tie the match five times down the stretch but never took the lead. The Sea Gulls won the set, 25-20, and followed with 25-17 and 25-14 victories.

Daniels (13 kills, 10 digs) and Thomas (12 kills, 10 digs) recorded double-doubles in the loss. Sophomore libero Raelyn Fuechtmann (South St. Paul, Minn.) led the defense with 13 digs.

Gallaudet wins first conference game with 2-0 victory

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The Gallaudet University women's soccer team picked up its first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win this season here Friday as the Bison shut out College of Saint Elizabeth, 2-0.

Gallaudet (2-4, 1-3 NEAC) controlled the conference game as the attack recorded 19 shots with 13 shots on goal. Senior midfielder Katie Benz (Ottawa, Ontario) got GU on the scoreboard in the 35th minute on a goal off a free position shot from 18 yards out. Her shot beat Eagles goalie Marie Goodman (11 saves). The Bison tallied 10 shots in the first half and took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Gallaudet found the back of the net once more. Senior midfielder Ashleigh Warden (Tucson, Ariz.) scored her first collegiate goal off a crossing assist from sophomore Deltona Markel (Austin, Texas) at the 82:30 mark.

Freshman goalie Silvya Levesque (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) made two saves in net as she recorded her second shutout this season.

Bison men's soccer nets eight in first conference win on the road

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team picked up its second win and first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win this season here Friday in an impressive victory, 8-1, over College of Saint Elizabeth.

The Bison (2-5-1, 1-2-1 NEAC) outshot the Eagles 26-13 and demonstrated their offensive potential as five different Bison found the back of the net.

GU was led by junior midfielder Angel Ortiz (New York, N.Y.), who scored two goals, including the game-winning goal, and added two assists.

Redshirt freshman Brian Espanto (San Antnio, Texas) struck first for the Bison in the 20th minute when he took advantage of an Eagles turnover. For the rest of the game, Gallaudet refused to lessen the pressure as it outshot St. Elizabeth (1-6, 0-3 NEAC) in both halves.

Just before the end of the half, Ortiz seized an opportunity to widen the gap when he scored off of a penalty kick which would hold as the game-winning goal.

Junior forward Tim Artinian (Henrietta, N.Y.) capitalized off a rebound for his first goal of the season in the 43rd minute. The Bison took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

GU maintained control throughout the second half scoring five more goals.

While Espanto (two goals) and Artinian (two goals) both found the back of the net once more for the Bison, it was Ortiz who capitalized with a highlight-reel goal from 40 yards out.

Freshman forward Roel Gutierrez (Austin, Texas) and junior forward Sean Huber (Orange Calif.) added their names to the scoresheet with goals in the 57th and 78th minute, respectively. Huber's goal was the first in a Bison uniform.

Leandro Suarez was the lone goal scorer for the Eagles as he scored in the 65th minute to cut the Bison lead to six, 7-1.

The Bison faced a tough opponent in the Nittany Lions, scoring one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, after the visitors plated 11. Sophomore Genesis Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) was on third base when sophomore Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) hit a solid ball to the outfield driving Rodriguez home. With 12 hits including a home run, triple and two doubles, the Nittany Lions took every opportunity they had to make contact at the plate.

Bison swept by Keuka in NEAC doubleheader at home

WASHINGTON – Needing wins to remain alive in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason picture, Gallaudet University fell short here Sunday as it lost both games of a conference doubleheader against Keuka College at Hoy Field.

Keuka (14-13, 5-5 NEAC) bats accounted for 12 runs in the first game en route to a 12-2 win in nine innings. The second game was very close at the end as Gallaudet (9-27, 4-8 NEAC) mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. GU trailed 5-0 heading into the seventh and stormed back to score four runs and had the tying run on base before the last batter popped up to end the game, 5-4.

Bison participate in two-day Morgan State Legacy Track Meet

BALTIMORE - The Gallaudet University women's track and field team spent the past two days here competing at the Morgan State Legacy Meet hosted by Morgan State University. Gallaudet didn't record a team point and was left out of final team rankings of 20 teams consisting of Division I, III and junior college caliber programs.

Senior Taylor Adams (Del City, Okla.) finished 18th in the hammer throw with a distance of 25.33 meters and finished in 26th place in shot put with a distance of 7.84 meters. Sophomore Amanda Lopez (New York, N.Y.) finished 20th with a distance of 23.79 meters. Senior Megan Calik (Conyers, Ga.) finished in 29th place in the shot put throw with a distance of 7.39 meters and finished in 28th place in the discus throw with a distance of 21.17 meters. Sophomore Juliana Apfel (Tucson, Ariz.) finished 23rd in the discus throw with a distance of 25.86 meters.

Sophomore Kori Koss (Green Bay, Wis.) finished in 32nd place in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:19.94 and freshman Michaela Evans (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished the long jump in 29th place jumping a height of 3.97 meters.

Both women's relay teams finished in 13th place today. The 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Koss, sophomore Lawjen Ashmore (Fairbanks, Alaska), freshman Saria Webb (Duncanville, Texas) and senior Shellane McKitty (Yonkers, N.Y.) finished with a time of 52.09 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay with Ashmore, Webb, McKitty and junior LaQuita Carroll (Spanish Fort, Ala.) finished witha time of 4:17.12.

Bison defeat nemesis Wilson on NFCA Strikeout Cancer Pink Day

WASHINGTON – It was an emotional day for the Gallaudet University softball team as it participated in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) "StrikeOut Cancer" Pink Day at the GU Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bison had cancer survivor Natalie Grindstaff throw out the first pitch to her daughter, Raquel Grindstaff (New Market, Md.), and then celebrated its 8-5 win, the first in seven tries, and first victory over Wilson College since 2014.

READING, Pa. – The Gallaudet University softball team lost both games on the road Sunday against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Penn St.-Berks 5-0 in the first game and 10-2 in five innings in the second game.

Game 1: Penn St.-Berks 5, Gallaudet 0
The Bison faced a tough match-up against the Nittany Lions, undefeated in NEAC play, in the first game as GU was only able to get three hits during the game. Only four Bison reached base in the complete game, but sophomore Jordan Hogan (Severn, Md.) was the only one to advance past first base.

GU scores over 30 runs in NEAC sweep at Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University baseball team was able to come out victorious in a critical North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader sweep of Cazenovia College on the road Sunday to wrap up the road portion of its 2016 regular-season schedule. Gallaudet (8-24, 3-5 NEAC) hit its way to a 18-9 win in the first game and a 13-7 victory in the second game over the host Cazenovia (4-16, 0-6 NEAC).

Game 1: Gallaudet 17, Cazenovia 9
Cazenovia got on board first with a four-run second inning and added another run in the bottom of the third inning off Gallaudet's junior starting pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.).

Gallaudet's offense exploded in the top of the fourth inning with a nine-run frame as it had 14 batters come to the plate thanks to six walks, two hits and a hit batter. The Bison would follow up with a seven-spot in the top of the sixth inning off six hits, two walks and a hit batter. The Bison would add one more run in the eight and the ninth inning to round out their offensive attack.

Evans earned his second win of the season as he pitched a complete game, surrendering nine runs on eight hits and nine walks and struck out six batters. Cazenovia senior starting pitcher Dan Colburn took the loss.

Game 2: Gallaudet 13, Cazenovia 7
Gallaudet was able to win the second leg of the doubleheader as its batters continued to make solid contact by collecting 15 hits, including a solo home run by junior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) in the seventh and final inning. Strong's first home run of the season was the first for the Bison as well.

The Bison offense scored first with a two-run first inning before Cazenovia came back to tie the game with a two-spot of its own in the bottom of the second inning. Gallaudet spread out its 13-run scoring attack with another two-run inning in the third, one in the fourth followed by a seven-spot in the fifth. Cazenovia cut the nine-run lead to five after the bottom of the sixth inning before Strong's home run in the seventh.

Gallaudet senior starting pitcher Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) pitched a complete game, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out four batters. Cazenovia junior starting pitcher Ryan Meyer took the loss.

Albert Blake masterful as Bison win in extra innings over Lancaster Bible

WASHINGTON – The visiting Gallaudet University baseball team battled back to defeat Lancaster Bible College 8-2 in eight innings in the second game of a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader here Sunday at Hoy Field. The Bison (6-22, 1-3 NEAC) were the visiting team for today's doubleheader as Lancaster Bible's home field was not playable as the games got shifted to the nation's capital. The Chargers (10-12, 2-2 NEAC), the home team, won the first game 9-0 in nine innings against the Bison.

Gallaudet collected eight hits in the first leg of the doubleheader, however they could not push a run across home plate as Lancaster Bible freshman starting pitcher Frank McCreary (1-2) picked up his first win of the season in a complete game shutout, allowing eight hits, walked two and struck out one.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Gallaudet University softball team was unlucky here Sunday as the Bison lost two leads against Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader sweep. The Bison held a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning of the first game before falling behind. GU rallied to tie it, only to give-up a three-run home run in the seventh to lose it 8-5. In the second game, Gallaudet (7-7, 1-5 NEAC) led 4-0 after two innings and took a 4-1 lead into the sixth before losing 6-4 to Wilson (9-9, 2-0 NEAC).

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team made the short trip over to the Brentwood community to face Catholic University of America on Tuesday afternoon and lost 7-1 at Robert J. Talbot Baseball Field.

The Cardinals (9-11) broke open a scoreless game with one run in the third inning and six in the fourth. Gallaudet (4-18) was plagued by missteps in the field as the Bison committed six errors that extended innings for Catholic.

McDaniel stays perfect with win over Gallaudet

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team fell short against an undefeated McDaniel College team on a mild Monday afternoon at Hoy Field as the Green Terror blanked the Bison, 7-0.

McDaniel (6-0) was able to maintain its unblemished record thanks to senior starting pitcher Marty Windisch (2-0) who threw seven scoreless innings where he allowed five hits, walked two and struck out five. Fellow senior pitcher Ben Van Put pitched the eighth inning and freshman D.J. Biscoe finished out the final inning to preserve the shutout victory for the Green Terror.

Gallaudet (3-10) had a runner on third in the fourth and fifth innings, and two runners on in the seventh inning; however, the Bison failed to capitalize on the scoring opportunities.

McDaniel scored a run in the third, fifth and the sixth inning off Gallaudet junior starting pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) who pitched 5.1 innings and kept the game close before being replaced by senior reliever Albert Blake (New Derby, Conn.).

Blake gave up four more runs (two earned) in the eighth inning. Junior Ken Genztke (Scottsville, N.Y.) pitched the final inning, recording his first collegiate strikeout on the first batter he faced.
Sophomores Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) and Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) accounted for four of Gallaudet's six hits in the game, including a triple for Hayes and a double for Gumm.
