Bison clipped by Cardinals, 7-1

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team made the short trip over to the Brentwood community to face Catholic University of America on Tuesday afternoon and lost 7-1 at Robert J. Talbot Baseball Field.

The Cardinals (9-11) broke open a scoreless game with one run in the third inning and six in the fourth. Gallaudet (4-18) was plagued by missteps in the field as the Bison committed six errors that extended innings for Catholic.

Gallaudet starting pitcher Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) took the loss as he allowed two runs (one
earned) on three hits, walked none and struck out one in three and a third innings of work. Junior Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.), who allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning, replaced Phillips (1-6).

The combo of senior pitchers Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.), Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) and sophomore Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) pitched an inning of scoreless relief each.

Catholic used a combination of eight different pitchers in the win. Collin Brown started the game and lasted two innings before giving way for seven relievers, who pitched one inning each.

GU got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when senior Brad Stockdill (New Castle, Pa.) reached base on a throwing error by the Catholic third baseman. The mistake allowed junior Kenneth Gentzke III (Scottsville, N.Y.) to race home.

Second baseman Andrew Stewart led Catholic at the plate going 2-for-2, scored twice and drove in one run in the win. Jack Crist had a three-run double in the fourth to clear the bases against Evans.
