Washington D.C - Mayor Bowser and DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announce the 36th Annual DC Senior Games (DCSG) in partnership with Aetna will take place Saturday, May 4, through Monday, May 20, 2019 at various DPR facilities and other locations. Last year, 300 senior athletes competed and this year looks to attract the largest field of seasoned seniors in the game’s history.
“We are proud and honored to host the senior athletes for this annual event in addition to providing facilities and programming to help our seniors stay fit all year round,” said DPR Director Delano Hunter. “The level of competition and the fun that these seniors have is a sight to behold.”
DC Senior Games is a yearly competition, hosted by DPR and sanctioned by the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) features activities including: basketball, bowling, horseshoe toss, pickleball, softball, swimming, tennis, and track and field. The event offered to DC residents age 50 and older, includes a grand opening and closing ceremony, medals the possibility to compete against over 10,000 athletes at the National Senior Games in New Mexico.
Sixty DC seniors that compete this year at the DC games will be eligible to participate in NSGA's National Senior Games, which takes place every two years. The 2019 National Senior Games begin June 14, 2019, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The DC Senior Games opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 10 a.m. at Kenilworth Recreation Center, located at 4321 Ord Street, NE. The closing ceremony will take place at Howard Theater on Monday, May 20 at 10 a.m.
DC Senior Games participants can register online until Friday, May 3, 2019, at 12pm.
Note: Aetna is sponsoring the first 300 senior athletes to register by waiving the entry fee. After 300 athletes, the cost will be $20 per person to register. Bowling competitors will be responsible for additional fees.
