Chairman Betty Ann Kane Appointed to National Board of Utility Regulators

District of Columbia - District of Columbia Public Service Commission Chairman Betty Ann Kane has been appointed to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC).  The Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia is a member of NARUC, which is a national association representing public service commissions that regulate essential utility services.  NARUC is a member-driven organization supervised by the Board of Directors.

As a member of the Board, Chairman Kane will help oversee NARUC's general and financial functions and approve resolutions that serve as NARUC’s policy.  The Board consists of 20 members plus the Association's President, the First and Second Vice Presidents, and each Past-President.  Members are appointed by the current NARUC President.

NARUC President, Philip B. Jones stated, “I am pleased to appoint Chairman Kane to the NARUC Board. She will bring an important consumer perspective to our deliberations. Her service to her regulatory colleagues is well known through her leadership at the National Regulatory Research Institute, the North American Numbering Council, Mid-Atlantic Conference of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, and much
more. I have enjoyed working with Commissioner Kane on the NARUC Committee on Telecommunications and the NRRI Board. She is a wise and balanced regulator and has a great deal of expertise in government affairs and the industries we regulate.”

Betty Ann Kane is an experienced public official combining over 30 years of service to the District of Columbia Government in elected and appointed positions with extensive private sector experience in regulatory, administrative and public policy matters. Before joining the PSC, Chairman Kane served two terms as an At-Large member of the DC Board of Education, and was elected to three terms as an At-Large member of the City Council.  She also served for twelve years as a Trustee and as Executive Director of the District of Columbia Retirement Board.

Betty Ann Kane has served as a Commissioner on the D.C. PSC since March 2007 and as Chairman of the Commission since 2009.

The District of Columbia Public Service Commission is an independent agency established by Congress in 1913 to regulate electric, natural gas and telephone companies in the District of Columbia.
