Softball Takes Walk-Off Win Over UNCG
Colonials won four out of five at the Carolina Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Jenna Cone's ninth-inning sacrifice fly scored Sidney Bloomfield to give George Washington softball a 4-3 walk-off win over UNC Greensboro to close the Carolina Classic on Sunday.
With the extra-inning victory over the defending Southern Conference
champion Spartans, the Colonials finished the weekend tournament 4-1,
including victories over Power 5 foes Maryland and North Carolina.
Sierra Lange
was named Carolina Classic MVP after going the distance in the finale
in a career-long outing to earn her ninth win of the season and fourth
of the tournament. In addition to her 1.09 ERA over 32 innings pitched
in a superb weekend in the circle, the sophomore from Texas also added
eight hits, including three doubles and a home run.
Elena Shelepak (9-for-17 with a home run and a double over the five games) earned a spot on the all-tournament team, as well.
On Sunday, GW (11-3) battled UNCG for nine well-played innings to punctuate an impressive weekend with a victory.
The Colonials scored their first three runs against the Spartans via the long ball.
Down 2-0 in the second, Hannah Eslick
got one back with a solo shot over the left field fence. It was the
first homer in Buff and Blue for the sophomore infielder, who joined the
club this spring as a transfer.
Cone's two-run homer in the third tied it at 3. The junior slugger's second of the season scored Jessica Linquist, who had doubled to lead off the frame.
The game stayed knotted up thanks to Lange's heroics in the circle.
After giving up three runs over the first three innings, the GW hurler
shut out the Spartans over the final six frames. She worked out of
bases-loaded jams in the fourth and sixth to keep the game tied.
Extra innings utilized the international tiebreaker rule in which a runner begins the inning at second base.
After neither team could advance its runner in the eighth, GW found a
way to take it in the ninth. Lange stranded a runner at third base, and
the Colonials were able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the
inning.
Marta Fuentes moved Bloomfield to third with a sacrifice bunt to set up Cone's game-winning sacrifice fly.
Linquist reached four times with a pair of doubles and a pair of walks,
while Cone finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs.
Morgan Kummer tallied two hits in the victory, as well, to finish the weekend with a .545 batting average (6-for-11).
UP NEXT: The Colonials are back at their home field on
the Mount Vernon Campus on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Howard,
starting at noon. They'll host the Colonial Classic next weekend with
five more home games scheduled Friday through Sunday.

Baseball Drops Series Finale with Manhattan in Extra Innings, 12-8
Fassnacht records five-hit day to spearhead 14-hit attack
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball saw a four-run lead
slip away late before ultimately falling in 11 innings, 12-8, in
Sunday's series finale against Manhattan at Tucker Field at Barcroft
Park.
Playing through a steady cold mist and flurry mixture, the Colonials and Jaspers traded runs early on with GW moving ahead 1-0 on an RBI double from junior Nate Fassnacht in the last of the first. An inning later, first-year Cade Fergus made it 2-1 GW with a two-out RBI single.
Manhattan evened the game, 2-2, in the third, and the game remained tied until a three-run fifth for the Colonials. Fassnacht started the frame with a double and promptly scored on an RBI single from sophomore Tyler Hix. A throwing error with the bags packed later in the inning plated two runs.
Fassnacht and Hix combined for yet another run in the sixth with a triple and an RBI groundout to make it 6-2.
Manhattan, though, rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to even things up and send the game to extra innings for the second time this weekend. GW had a great chance to walk-off with the win in the 10th after a two-out triple from Fergus, but a phenomenal defensive play from the Jaspers infield on a sharp grounder from sophomore Trevor Kuncl moved the game to the 11th.
That's when the Jaspers took over, scoring six times against the Colonials bullpen. GW mounted a rally in the home half with junior Alex O'Rourke and redshirt freshman Derek Ripp driving in runs, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Despite the loss, GW pounded out 14 hits offensively led by Fassnacht's 5-for-6 day. The Ephrata, Pa., native finished a homer shy of the cycle with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. Fergus went 4-for-6, also coming up a home run shy of the cycle with a double, triple, run scored and RBI.
The Colonials travel to Dover, Del. for a mid-week contest on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Delaware State before returning home next weekend to open up a three-game series with UMass-Lowell on Friday.

Baseball Rumbles Past Jaspers in Doubleheader Sweep
Colonials erase deficits in both games to sweep second twin-bill of the year
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball secured a walk-off win in
the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Manhattan, 7-6 in 11
innings, before coming from behind and blowing out the Jaspers in the
nightcap, 18-7. The Colonials have now swept doubleheaders in
consecutive weekends to improve to 7-4 on the year.
GW 7, Manhattan 6 (11): The Colonials played from ahead for the majority of Saturday's opener before having to rally in extra innings for the win.
GW was in front 5-3 heading to the ninth before Manhattan tied the game
on a two-run single. The Jaspers grabbed a 6-5 lead in the top of the
11th, but the Colonials rallied in the home half to walk off with the
win.
Redshirt freshman Derek Ripp started the rally with a walk before being run for by first-year Trey Torain. After a sacrifice bunt, first-year Cade Fergus tied the game with a single and raced home on the game-winning double from junior Nate Fassnacht.
Fergus and Fassnacht led the Colonials offensively with three hits a
piece as Fergus drove in three runs in the opener. First-year Noah Levin went 2-for-5 and smashed his first career home run, a solo shot in the last of the eighth.
Senior Nate Woods tossed 8.1 innings in a no-decision for GW, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Junior Keagan McGinnis earned the victory in relief, striking out four in 2.1 innings of work.
GW 18, Manhattan 7: The Jaspers came out swinging in
game two, blasting three home runs in the first five innings to take a
7-4 lead halfway home. That's when GW's offense went to work with 14
unanswered runs over the next three frames for the runaway victory.
Sophomore Tyler Hix
accounted for half of the 14 runs with seven RBIs in three at-bats. Hix
followed Fassnacht's two-run double with one of his own in the fifth
inning to move the Colonials ahead, 8-7. A Dom D'Alessandro single gave GW a 9-7 edge as part of a five-run fifth inning.
The Buff & Blue then blew things wide open with six runs in the sixth. Fassnacht and junior Steve Barmakian plated runs before Hix drove in two more with another double, this one just inside the third base bag.
First-year Logan Doran
capped off the six-run frame with a two-run single to center, making it
15-7. In the next inning, Barmakian drove in a run with a base knock
before scoring on Hix's two-run home run to straight away center.
Hix surpassed his six-RBI effort last week against Saint Peter's with a
seven-RBI game, going 3-for-5 with three extra-base hits and four runs
scored. Fassnacht notched three hits, two runs and three RBI while
Barmakian scored three times and drove in a pair. D'Alessandro, Levin
and Doran all plated two runs as well.
On the hill, junior Jaret Edwards gutted his way through five innings to earn the win. Sophomore Trevor Kuncl was brilliant in relief, silencing the Jaspers over four scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the save.
