Hoyas Cruise Past Delaware State, 10-5

BETHESDA, Md. - Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) won his first career game and the Georgetown University baseball team tied a season high with six doubles, defeating Delaware State, 10-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-16, while the Hornets fall to 2-21.
Grzebinski started on the mound and put together his best outing of the season, going 6.0 strong innings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. He retired 12-straight batters at one point. Beau Dana (Marblehead, Mass./Deerfield Academy) allowed two unearned runs in two innings of relief. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) recorded the last out with the bases loaded for his first career save.
Richie O’Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) was on base three times with two hits and a walk, scored two runs and had an RBI. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had two doubles, and also had an RBI and scored a pair of runs. Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) also had a multi-hit game with a single and a double.
After Delaware State manufactured a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, the Hoyas answered with a three-run bottom half of the first to go ahead. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) opened the scoring with an RBI ground out, pushing Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John’s College HS), who had reached on a fielder’s choice, across the plate. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) then scored on a wild pitch to give GU the lead. O’Reilly restarted the rally with a single, stole second and scored on an error to make it 3-1.
Georgetown extended its lead to 7-1 with a four-run third inning. McCabe was hit by a pitch to lead off, went to second on a balk and scored when Achecar reached on a throwing error. O’Reilly then launched a double into the right-center field gap, scoring Achecar all the way from first. After an infield single by Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley), Nelson lined a double over the centerfielder’s head, his first career hit, to score another run. A sacrifice fly by James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) scored Davis to give GU a 7-1 lead.
Nelson led off the fifth inning with a single and raced all the way home on a double to right by Weisenberg. Two batters later, Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) lofted a sacrifice fly to score Weisenberg and extend the lead to 9-1.
The Hornets scored two unearned runs off of Dana in the seventh inning, but the Hoyas answered with back-to-back doubles by Weisenberg and Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 10-3 game.
Delaware State scored two runs off of Conor Cuse (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Harvard-Westlake/Stanford) in the ninth to provide the final score, 10-5.
The Hoyas will head back out on the road for a three-game series at UNC Greensboro this weekend. Due to the Easter holiday, the teams will play Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Links to live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
