Bison fall behind early against Penn St.-Berks

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's soccer team had a disappointing Sunday in its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game against Penn St.-Berks as the Bison lost, 4-0, on a picturesque afternoon at Hotchkiss Field.

The Bison fell behind early, though no fault of their own, when Penn St.-Berks (5-6-1, 3-4 NEAC) scored the first goal on a free kick just two minutes in. Penn St.-Berks' Omar Guzman (three goals) took the free kick, as the whistle was blown before the Bison team was set up to receive the kick. Guzman's shot traveled over 20 yards into the lower right corner of the net past a surprised goalie Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.). Gallaudet (1-10-2, 0-8 NEAC) was forced to play catch-up the rest of the game after falling behind 1-0 so quickly.

Guzman scored his second goal in the 29th minute off an assist from Jon Mercier as the Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Setzer made five of his eight saves in the first half to lead the Bison.

The Bison played hard throughout the game but were unable to pull even with the Nittany Lions. A Gallaudet foul at the 67:36 mark of the second half in the goalie box led to a penalty kick that Guzman converted for his ninth goal of the season. Mercier capped the scoring, four minutes later, with an unassisted goal.
